Residence ABC Paulista, DESIGNED BY Gui Mattos
FROM THE ARCHITECTS
On a large corner lot, this project involves the demolition of an old house and its transformation into a completely new plan, configured by reading the shape of the land, its slope, pre-existing gardens, and the potential views to be framed. Laid out in a “T” shape, the house develops along two main axes. The longer wing forms a protective wall for the neighboring property and serves as the entrance sequence, evolving into the social area before transitioning into the private zone. The shorter but wider base of the “T” contains the entire social program, projecting toward the lowest point of the site and opening the house to contemplative gardens and the pool. At the junction of these two arms, a spiral staircase leads to an elevated second layer of experiences — guest rooms and a leisure zone including a gym, sauna, and massage room. Designed to function independently from the rest of the residence, the upper level allows the home to operate as a primarily single-story house when not hosting visitors. From another perspective, the project is defined by two horizontal planes — metal structures clad with wooden soffits and stone flooring — within which the volumes shift and slide. Independent monolithic blocks organize the intimate programs and frame transitional, open-air spaces for social living. Together, these strategies create a residence that is grounded, expansive, and deeply responsive to its topography and gardens.
