NoMad Diner, DESIGNED BY Stonehill Taylor

In the fashion-driven heart of Manhattan, Stonehill Taylor has given Arlo NoMad’s bar & lounge a reimagined identity as NoMad Diner — one that picks up on mid-century diner vernacular but loosens it. Sleek concrete floor grounds the space; warm oak paneling, leather banquettes, and chrome trims evoke vintage diners. The design leans into the play of materials and forms: reeded oak, sculptural chrome sconces, retro barstools mixed with contemporary bentwood chairs, and a band of mirrors around the bar that expands light and depth. More than just décor, NoMad Diner negotiates atmosphere and program with intention. By removing a wall that formerly partitioned the bar from the lobby, the space feels more integrated, open, and social. Yet there are moments of intimacy: cozy banquettes, slatted walnut screens offering partial enclosure, and lighting that shifts mood from day to night. Texture becomes a dramatic tool — from the polished chrome, felt or leather upholstery, to subtle patterning in wood and mirrors — lending tactility that invites you to stay. What makes NoMad Diner especially compelling is its balancing act: it doesn’t just revive the motifs of nostalgia, it interrogates them. The design acknowledges the dominant trends (retro, diner revival, maximal-touch) but roots itself instead in honest material choices, neighborhood identity, and a clear program: to serve as a comfortable, lively social anchor in a hotel/bar setting. For Linear readers, it teaches that the best hospitality spaces aren’t those that merely look pretty — they’re those that carry feeling, texture, and rootedness in their locale, while still feeling utterly of the moment.
