Howqua Hills, Australia

In the Victorian Alps, where fog curls through eucalypts and the air hums with silence, Rob Mills Architects’ Howqua River Lodge almost disappears into the landscape. Low and elongated, its stone and timber walls follow the river bend like a contour line. Inside, rough-sawn timber, bagged plaster, and linen curtains soften the palette, catching the breeze and the uneven fall of light across unpolished surfaces. Entirely self-sufficient, the lodge shows that sustainability can be sensual—that off-grid can also mean deeply in place. Here, luxury is measured in peace.
